The project involved the conversion of a farm building dating back to 1940, located on a plot surrounded by greenery and old fruit trees in the Szmelta district of Rumia. The goal was to create a space that would honor the history of the site while providing a modern and comfortable living environment.
One of the unique aspects of the design is the use of charred boards on the facade and roof. Siberian larch and Scandinavian spruce were carefully selected and treated to achieve a striking black finish. This choice not only pays homage to the old wooden barns that once dotted the area but also adds a contemporary touch to the overall aesthetic.
The interior layout of Stodolove was carefully planned, with the front window and seating area serving as the central hub of the living space. This unconventional approach creates a welcoming and functional environment, where residents can gather and enjoy the surrounding views.
Throughout the design process, Sokolowska conducted extensive research on the history of the site and the region. Archival maps, documents, and photographs were studied to gain a deeper understanding of the area's heritage. This attention to detail and respect for the past is evident in every aspect of Stodolove's design.
However, the project was not without its challenges. The construction laws and regulations for the land posed significant obstacles, as the area was under conservation supervision with strict restrictions. Geological surveys, structural studies, and months of design development were necessary to ensure compliance and create a building that seamlessly blended with its surroundings.
Despite the difficulties, Stodolove was successfully completed in June 2022, after more than three years of reconstruction. The project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and rising material costs, but Sokolowska's dedication and perseverance prevailed.
Stodolove has garnered recognition for its exceptional design. In 2023, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious accolade celebrates designs that exhibit technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
Stodolove is a testament to the power of design to honor the past while embracing the future. Through its careful attention to detail, respect for tradition, and seamless integration with the natural surroundings, this modern barn conversion stands as a symbol of architectural innovation and timeless beauty.
